Deep Section Carbon TubularSuitabilityIf you are looking for a set of wheels for Road Racing, Crits, TT or Triathlon that are as fast and light as possible, tubulars are the weapon of choice.
The ProsFor racing, reduced rolling resistance and weight, tubular wheels and tyres remain the ultimate choice for performance. Because there is no need to manufacture the wheel with a 'hook' to lock into the bead of a clincher tyre, rims can be manufactured lighter and currently even the lightest clincher set up will always be slightly heavier than its tubular counterpart.
The ConsTubular tyres are glued or taped to the rim, which is a process many people wish to avoid due to the perceived hassle. This is also a factor if you puncture during a ride. Sealant (e.g. by Stan's or Tufo) is available and shown to be very effective. However, for most people, standard clincher rims and tyres are the go-to set up for general training rides and commuting. Super Light 38mm Climbing Tubular WheelsetSuitabilityThese lower profile carbon tubular wheels are perfect for when the road heads up!
The ProsUsing the low weight and reduced rolling resistance found with tubular systems, they dispose of the extra material found on deep section rims for even more weight saving. Whilst climbing, the aerodynamic advantage of deep section wheels is lost due to the decreased speed. Lower profile tubulars also bring the rotational weight of the wheelset down to the minimum.
The ConsIn addition to the gluing these share with their deep section counterparts, at speed you won't get the same aerodynamic advantage that 50mm+ deep section wheels will have.
